Latin for Learning: know what you are getting involved with!

When you take on a second language you need to understand that to acquire a second language is one of the most difficult, yet easy, things the human brain can do. It will be hard, it will be difficult. When you study a second language it requires a lot of resources from you body and you may find that you are physically tired and need to go to sleep. This is normal. You may find that you are not making any progress. Don’t worry. One day, if you put in enough work and time you will discover that you will wake up and understand where just the day before you could not. Thus are the mysteries of the brain.

Latin for Learning: don’t let others discourage you!

You may hear in the course of your Latin study from people who don’t like the language that “Latin is a dead language” or that “no one speaks Latin anymore” or even “why don’t you study a useful language like Chinese”. Some people may even try to explain why some other language like Greek or Sanskrit are some how better than Latin. Don’t listen. Modern linguistics and research into second language acquisition tells us that no language is intrinsically better than any other and no language ever really dies. Indeed the very concept of what is and is not a certain language is today being challenged as we delve deeper into how the brain uses language.

No one stops or discourages people who study Coptic or ancient Egyptian from studying that language so why are they worried that you want to study Latin. No one goes up to people who study Ge’ez to tell them that no one speaks the language anymore. No one goes up to someone studying Korean and tells them that studying Russian would somehow be better. Only Latin it seems gets the bashing because only Latin has been such an influential language that all others are somehow measured by it. If that is right or fair is not for us to judge. We just feel confidence in our ability to use this very useful language and we want to help others to their dream as well.
